11 Fascinating Facts about StarFish aka Sea Stars

I bet you every time you see a StarFish you think: "ow how cute!", but little did a lot of us know these interesting creatures are far from cute, well unless you think an alien is;)
Check this out:
1. They can regenerate arms: Sea stars house most of their vital organs in their arms. This means that some species can even regenerate an entirely new sea star from just one arm and a portion of the star's central disc. It takes about a year for an arm to grow back. 👽

2.  They are not Fish and are related to sand dollars, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and sea lilies.
3. They can only live in Salt Water. 🌊

4. They don’t have Blood or Brain. Starfish uses filtered sea water to pump nutrients through their nervous system. 🧠
5. Not all Sea Stars have 5 arms. Some species have many more, such as the sun star, which can have up to 40 arms😳
6. They have Eyes 👁, just not in the place you would expect, an eye spot is at the end of each arm. This means that a five-armed sea star has five eyes, while the 40-armed sun star has 40 eyes👀🙈.
7. Sea Stars Eat With Their Stomachs Inside-Out. Sea stars prey on mussels and clams, as well as small fish, snails, and barnacles. A sea star's mouth is on its underside. When it catches its food, the sea star will wrap its arms around the animal's shell and pull it open just slightly. Then it pushes its stomach through its mouth and into the shell. It then digests the animal and slides its stomach back into its own body. 😖🤬
8. There are about 2,000 species of sea stars. Some live in the tidal zone, while others live in the deep waters of the ocean. While many species live in tropical areas, sea stars can also be found in cold areas—even the polar regions.
9. The average lifespan of a sea star is 35 years. 🎂
10. The are pretty heavy: At least for something of their small size, sea stars can weigh up to 11 pounds. 💪🏻
11. Sea stars move using hundreds of tube feet, which are located on their underside. The tube feet are filled with sea water and they can move very quickly. 🦶🏻

Great info about these critters and learned a lot I didn't know. I often take friends snorkeling/free-diving to Phil Foster park, at the Blue Heron bridge, in Rivera Beach, and I now can share info this with everyone the next time we see on, which we always do.

BTW, if you two are visiting South Florida, let me know. I am retired, and for fun, would really enjoy teaching you both a little about underwater photography & video, maybe even do a mermaid shoot with you.
