POWER VS SAIL: Which Catamaran is right for YOU?

5/28/2023

The Power Cat VS. the Sailing Cat, a classic rivalry! Join us as we dive straight into the pros of power versus the pros of sailing.
The Power Cat:
Stability, speed, and the capacity to host a spacious exterior, the power cat is recommended for destination-based travel. You’ll be able to outrun a storm or the clock and keep a smooth feel throughout the journey. Here is our list of the top five pros of POWER and SAIL:
Pros of Power:
  1. No mast = more open space in the salon: Eliminating the mast gives you much more flexibility on designing the layout of your vessel.
  2. It’s faster: Sometimes bigger is better, and in this case, the power cat’s larger motors result in increased speeds. Not only does the higher speed capacity allow you to outrun storms (which can be impossible on a sailing cat) you also reap the benefit of being able to smoothly glide over large waves, deterring sea sickness. On a simpler note, it can get you to destinations quicker when you are on a limited time frame.
  3. Solid floor-deck: Into outdoor lounging? If so, on the power cat you will have more usable exterior space, which leaves room for more outdoor furniture.
  4. It has a bigger flybridge: Speaking of additional space, the power cat also hosts a larger flybridge, creating more room for a sitting area or additional storage.
  5. No maintenance on the sails & rigs: Last but certainly not least, sailing in many ways is like a full-time job, and power cats have the ability to alleviate a lot of that work.

Pros of Sailing:
Enjoy the sound of wind and waves and breathe in untainted air as you sail around the world unbound by time. Through a sailing lens, the beauty really lies in the process, the destination is just an added bonus. If you’re into the journey and have time on your side, the sailing cat may be your perfect fit. Here is our list of five sailing pros!
  1. It uses less fuel: The engines on a sailing cat are smaller, and you also have the option of using no engine at all. With a sailing cat, there really are no limits: the lack of dependency on fuel provides unlimited range – if both engines go out (although it’s unlikely) you always have an emergency backup option.
  2. You have the ability to move silently: Cut off the engines and sail as you move silently through the water, listening to the unhindered sound of the wind and waves! An added perk – you also lost the smell of fumes while you sail.
  3. It’s more economical: Not only is a sailing cat cheaper to buy, it is also the engines are cheaper to maintain thanks to the smaller motors and decreased mechanical labor.
  4. You can add solar panels to the mast: There’s plenty of space that can be utilized to generate clean energy.
  5. You can sail the world more economically: tying back to less fuel and maintenance, one of the biggest perks of a sailing cat is being able to sail the world at a much lower cost!
In our case, we have enough love to go around for both power and sailing cats! It really boils down to which better fits your needs and preferences. Do you have a power or sailing cat, or are you someone who is torn between the two? Let us know in the comments!
Ahoy,
